Buttplates, Buttplate Screws, Forearm Lug
This picture shows the checkered steel buttplate in the white, as cast, and after with case color. I do NOT polish, case color or blue the plate, that is up to you.
These will NOT be a perfect fit to replace original Winchester buttplates, being a casting, they have about 5% shrinkage factor.
This reproduction plate comes in the white (as cast, shown in the photo, in 4140 steel). They will require careful polishing in preparation for blue or case color.
Cost for this buttplate, including the correct screws is $38.00 plus $12.00 shipping
Crescent Buttplate- this is a cast reproduction crescent steel (4140) buttplate, of the short tang Winchester crescent. While the casting is good quality, it does require some filing and polishing. The buttplate in the photo BEFORE polishing is what you get. It is bored and counter sunk for screws, which are included in the price of $38.00 (plus $12.00 shipping if ordered separate from stock set.) This buttplate is a copy of a Winchester, however, being a casting, it is reduced approx. 5% from original. This works fine for a new stock, but will be undersize on an original stock.
Many of my buttstock patterns are adapted to this plate, please inquire before purchase.

3 Basic Types of Buttplates
there are hundreds of different buttplates, with few exceptions, they fall into 3 basic types.
In the photo below,
The upper right hand stock is a typical "shotgun style butt"
The middle stock is a "crescent style butt"
The lower right stock is a "saddle ring carbine, or military style"
The upper right hand shotgun style is shown in the 3 photos above. There are far too many shotgun style buttplates to cover in detail, but this is the one I offer for sale, and lends itself
to many stocks.
The middle stock is a basic crescent rifle butt. I sell the basic version Winchester style, short tang standard crescent buttplate, and several of my patterns have been designed for this plate.
To confuse the issue, there are countless variations of crescent plates, and it would be a major
mistake to assume all crescent buttplates are alike.
The bottom stock is what I call a 'carbine' or 'military' type buttplate inlet.
Like the crescent style, there are countless sizes that fall into this category.
Today, they are most commonly found on the Ruger 10-22, Henry Lever actions, and import versions of the Winchester Saddle Ring Carbines.
This style of buttplate was quite common on early military and civilian working guns.
Here again, no two are alike, and generally I do not cut stocks for this style buttplate, as it is very unlikey to match the stock buttplate inlet to the many variations of buttplates.

A common question is--can the crescent plate I offer for sale be fit to a new Marlin lever action to get a more traditional look? The answer is both yes and no.
Yes, you could the stock to accept the buttplate, but no, it will not be even close to right. The adapted factory stock will be far too short in length of pull, and would require a major reshaping of the stock to the width of the buttplate.
It would seem like a good idea at first thought, but shortly becomes one of those "what was I thinking" projects.
I do make a stock for the Marlin Cowboy, using this plate, see the Marlin page.

Traditional buttplate screws are now available!
(These ARE included with your buttplate order)
Produced to the dimensions of an original 19th Century buttplate screw, these are ideal for the finishing touch on your classic rifle.
I searched for proper buttplate screws, and had poor luck finding what I wanted. Most of the screws I found had problems like- oversize screw slots, or were plated, wrong size head and shank, import quality. In short, I could not find quantities of what I felt were proper buttplate screws.
I had a major American manufacturer make a production run of these screws to original specs, in C-1022 steel.
As original, they have a rebated head, heavy shank and the correct narrow slot (use a .035 screwdriver) and 1 1/8 inch length. The difference is the threads, which are a modern style and pitch, differing from the originals, but the outward fit and appearance are correct.
These are unplated, and ready to polish, blue or case color.
Pack of 2 screws-- $15.00 postpaid
Pack of 20 screws-- $55.00 postpaid
Pack of 100 screws-- $125.00 postpaid
Inquire for special pricing on 1000 or more.
